Self Care on the Go: Tips for Maintaining Balance Whilst Travelling

by Ayesha Master 20 Apr 2024

Traveling is something that I really enjoy as it opens up new horizons and experiences. However, amidst the excitement, it's essential to prioritize self-care to ensure you're at your best throughout your journey. Whether you're traveling for business or pleasure, here are some tips that help me maintain my well-being whilst I’m on the go which I hope you find useful.

1. Prioritise Sleep:
Adequate rest is crucial for overall health and well-being, especially when traveling. Aim for consistency in your sleep schedule as much as possible, even if it means adjusting to a new time zone. Bring along items that can help create a comfortable sleep environment, such as an eye mask, earplugs, and a travel pillow. Some of my selfcare essentials are a self heating eye mask, comfy socks, lavender oil and a good book to help me with my travel anxiety.

2. Stay Hydrated:
Traveling can be dehydrating, especially if you're flying or spending long hours in transit. Carry a reusable water bottle with you and aim to drink plenty of fluids throughout the day. Opt for water over sugary or caffeinated beverages to keep your body hydrated and energized. I also always take my chamomile herbal tea bags with me which I have every night before I sleep to help me have a good sleep.

3.Pack Healthy Snacks:
Avoid relying solely on airport or convenience store food by packing your own healthy snacks. Nuts, fruit, granola bars, and cut-up vegetables are portable options that can help keep hunger at bay and provide essential nutrients on the go.

4.Practice Mindfulness:
Traveling can be hectic and overwhelming at times, making it important to stay grounded and present. Take moments throughout your journey to practice mindfulness techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, or simply observing your surroundings without judgment. These practices can help reduce anxiety and increase overall well-being. Currently I’m also taking mindfulness colouring books with me when I’m travelling which is also helping me spend less time on my phone!

5.Schedule Downtime:
While it's tempting to pack your itinerary with activities, remember to schedule downtime for rest and relaxation. Whether it's a quiet evening in your hotel room or a leisurely afternoon at a local cafe, giving yourself permission to unwind can prevent burnout and ensure you have the energy to fully enjoy your travels. For me a spa day or booking a massage is something I always do so I always come back feeling refreshed after my trip.

6. Maintain Routines:
While traveling disrupts your usual routine, try to maintain some semblance of consistency in your daily habits. Whether it's sticking to your skincare regimen, practicing yoga each morning, or journaling before bed, having familiar rituals can provide a sense of comfort and stability. For me working out every morning before my day starts is essential to help me start my day with a positive mindset.

Self-care is not something to be neglected, even when you're on the move. By prioritizing sleep, hydration, nutrition, movement, mindfulness, downtime, and routine, you can ensure that your travels are not only enjoyable but also nurturing for your mind, body, and soul. So, the next time you embark on a journey, remember to pack your self-care toolkit along with your passport and sunscreen. Your well-being will thank you for it.
